In the period from July 2017 to April 2018, textile and apparel exports reached US$11.2bn, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported yesterday (21 May). The growth is attributed to cash subsidies offered under the prime minister's exports enhancement package. The main driver of growth for the ten-month period was the value-added textile sector as exports of readymade garments rose 12% to $1.12bn and 13.4% in volume. Knitwear rose 14.6% to $2.2bn, and 3.7% in volume, while exports of cotton fabric were up 1.1% to $1.8bn, and 4.2% in volume. Cotton yarn, meanwhile, saw export growth of 7.2% to $1.12bn, and 12.8%. Textiles and apparel contribute nearly 70% to Pakistan's total export earnings. It is the world's fourth largest cotton producer, one of the world's largest cotton users, and the sixth largest textile exporter. The country's current Textile Policy, which runs from 2015-2019, aims to double textile and clothing exports to US$26bn by 2019.
